La Scuola Inutile
Learning what will always matter
La Scuola Inutile is a project conceived by Mario Trimarchi and Stefano Mirti in collaboration with ADI Design Museum.
Four days devoted to freehand drawing, photography, reading and writing: practices that only appear removed from usefulness, but are in fact essential for slowing down, observing and developing an unconventional perspective on the world.

Project
The first edition took place at ADI Design Museum from 14 to 17 September 2026.
The programme opened with a Manifesto Day, during which philosophers, scientists, designers, artists, entrepreneurs and language scholars were invited to reflect on the meaning of uselessness.
The conversations were followed by three days of workshops devoted to freehand drawing, photography, reading and writing. Three different practices united by the same intention: to slow down, observe more carefully and learn how to describe the interstices of reality.
Identity
The name already contains the project’s manifesto: it brings together the idea of a school and something that appears to have no purpose.
Red and tilted, the logo recalls a school stamp: a recognisable mark that is impressed onto a surface and leaves a trace. Its inclination disrupts the order of the page, giving visual form to the unconventional perspective encouraged by the School. Alongside the logo are seashells drawn by Mario Trimarchi.
The stamp was applied by hand to each notebook. The same inclination appears on the T-shirts and throughout the communication materials, creating an identity that is simple and recognisable, yet never entirely uniform.
Results
The School awarded no certificates and offered no immediately marketable skills. What it left behind were drawings, photographs, words, encounters and questions that remain open.
We do not yet know what purpose it will serve. It seems like a good beginning.
